What is it?

The Comprehensive District Design examines and makes recommendations on how MPS educates students, how the school system works to meet the needs of underserved populations and how we ensure resources are available to meet our goals.

When will it happen?

  • April 2020 — Board will vote on major parts of the design
  • 2021 and 2022 school years — Changes in recommended school pathways or boundaries unless urgently required before this time

How can I be involved?

  • Attend community meetings planned for January and February 2020
  • Attend, livestream or watch recordings of Board meetings
  • Send feedback via the survey
  • Talk to your school principal
  • Request a CDD info session for your school or organization

Parents are encouraged to engage in this process and to learn how proposed changes will affect all of our students and families.  Please fill out the District Survey (

Winter Weather Attire: Students are provided a 30 minute recess or activity period daily. Most days, students are sent outside. If the wind-chill temperature is below zero, or if the weather is inclement (rain/lightning), students may remain indoors for this recess. Please dress your child appropriately to be outdoors everyday (hat, gloves, coat, snow pants, etc.).

Weather Related School Closings - Please review the MPS procedures for school closings due to inclement weather.

When Should my Child Stay Home?: As the cold and flu season approaches, you may be asking 'When should my child stay home?' The following are general guidelines to help with this decision.

Keep your child home if:

  • They have had a fever of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours
  • They have vomited 2 or more times in the past 24 hours
  • They have diarrhea, an increased number of stools compared to normal or has stools that are loose, and they need to use the bathroom frequently
  • They have a rash for which the cause is unknown.  Check with your doctor before sending to school.
  • They have an illness (severe wheeze, severe cough, etc.) that prevents them from participating in school activities
  • Please call the attendance line at 612-668-4524 if your child will be absent or if you have any questions about whether to send your child to school

School Start Time: A reminder that school starts at 9:10 am. Students who are dropped off, walk, or bike to school can arrive as early at 8:45 am if they are going to eat breakfast. For the safety of our students, unless they are enrolled in the Minneapolis Kids program, please do not drop them off at school until 8:55 am (8:45 am if students are eating breakfast). Northrop staff is typically in meetings from 8:00-8:55 am, therefore we do not have the capacity to supervise children during that time. Students who arrive after 9:10 a.m. will have to sign in at the office and be considered tardy.

Dismissal Changes: This is an extremely busy time of day.  Please communicate to the teacher or office in person or in writing well in advance of dismissal time if your child will be going home in an alternative way, i.e. instead of taking the bus home they will be picked up or have permission to walk to their destination, etc.

Arrival and Dismissal

  • Safety Tips –
    • Please do not stop in the street and send your children across the street.
    • Please be safe and look in all directions before crossing the street and use the crosswalks when possible.  Thank you!

  • The end of the school day is 3:40pm.  Please use Door 13 if you will be picking up your child after school.  Classroom teachers will bring your child to the gym (please wait until 3:40 before entering the gym) and they be waiting for you there.  Please wait in the hallway by Door 13.  We are trying to decrease the congestion in the hallway by the main entrance. Door 13 will be open for parent pick-up between 3:40 -3:50 pm.
  • In order to help with the congestion on the sidewalk in front of the school during dismissal, we would like families to walk on the west side of 31st Avenue and cross at the intersection of 31st Ave and 43rd Street.

Student Lunch Accounts: No child will ever be denied a lunch in MPS. However, if they are purchasing any item ala carte, such as milk, a second entree, or dessert, they have to have money in their lunch account or pay with cash. Please check your child's account by going to to manage balances, apply for educational benefits, and see menus and nutritional information.
